Citrine: Meaning and Ancient Legends
Citrine takes its name from the Latin "citrus", evoking lemon, because of its shades varying from pale yellow to a luminous, even lively, orange. This gemstone is found in various deposits around the world, including Brazil, Australia, Madagascar, Spain and Uruguay, where it often coexists with amethyst, sharing a similar composition and equivalent hardness. A rare stone, born from the natural mixture of Citrine and Amethyst, is known as ametrine.
Belonging to the quartz family, Citrine is mainly made up of silicon dioxide. In ancient Greece, it was known to repel reptiles and protect against snake venom. Associated with luck and protection against the evil eye, it was a prized talisman. A Bolivian legend tells of an indigenous tribe giving a Spanish conquistador a mine of yellow stones as a wedding gift. Disdaining this present, he was injured during an attack, and his dying wife gave him a Citrine, symbol of her love torn between her tribe and her husband.
